Swing Bridge Removal/installation and Replacement Scheme – West Yorkshire

The works consisted of the following elements of work:

  • The removal and replacement of the swing bridges
  • Vehicular and pedestrian handrails including re-surfacing to the approaches to the swing bridge
  • Landscaping of the surrounding banks.
  • Concrete works for the kiosk which housed the control cabinet for the swing bridge and all of the associated ducting works.

One of the most interesting parts of the scheme was the excavation of the canal bed and installation of electric ducts under the canal which facilitated special core drilling techniques and specialist diving teams. The trench was excavated from a barge using a 3t excavator and the ducts were held in place using steel anchors and clay filled sandbags.
